Naming Kittens!

I think this is the proper place to post this...

 

The no-kill rescue I volunteer for got in a whole bunch of kittens in the last couple weeks. One was very near death, and my boss nursed him back to health and now he's quite the lively little thing! He gets into trouble trying to explore everywhere and everything, and also plays rough...with the adult cats! So we are looking to name him something that will fit (right now he's simply being called "Monster"! LOL). My boss would like a Russian name, but all I can think of is Ivan (yanno, after Ivan The Terrible... and Ivan also means "God is gracious", which I like). I also looked up names for gods or mythical beings of trickery and mischeif. Is there any suggestions from an Islam aspect?

 

Anyhoo, what originally brought me to this forum was researching Muezza. One of the kittens has deformed back legs, and may be crippled for the rest of his life. It will probably be impossible to adopt him out, so I am going to keep him. I had a cat who was born without her back legs, and knew she wouldn't be able to survive on her own (she was from a feral/wild mom). But last October she got sick so I had to euthanize her. Her name was Paizly, because of the swirl markings.

I have seen a couple references that Muezza means to cherish or care about someone. Is that about right? Also, how do you pronounce it in English? I am thinking it's something like "Moo-eh-zah"?

 

We're probably not going to name the other dozen kittens we have, as they will be easily adoptable and we won't have them long enough to really bother with thinking up all those names! We usually only name the "special" ones we get attached to and end up keeping.

i dont know the meaning of Muezza. All i can say about giving names to animals in an Islamic perspective is that i am against of giving names of holy people (like prophets'). i love animals so much, but human being is a superior creature than animals since Allah has chosen "us" to be a slave to Him and pray to Him. So especially important people's names in our religion cannot be given to less superior creatures like animals in terms of respect.

 

i can suggest you a turkish name, bıcırık, means like "patter". :)

It's surely not Moo-eh-zah, rather mu-'ez-za

I have always thought names were very important. I am fascinated by the origins and meanings of names, and think they should be chosen to reflect the person/animal. I guess this is from the fact that my mother didn't bother to really think of anything for me until the last minute... I was born, and they were making the birth certificate and asked what my name was. My mother said "oh, i don't know... Julia, after my grandmother". Not to say I don't like my great grandmother, but it's more the issue that it was an afterthought kind of thing.

 

Anyhoo. My cats are very special to me, so I always try to match their names with their appearance or personality. It can take a week or more for me to choose a name for a cat, as I want it to fit them just right. Whether it's kittens, or an adult cat that I want to change to fit better. For instance, Lily just didn't fit my black cat I got when she was rescued at 3 yrs old. She has a little smudge of white on her hip, plus little random white hairs all over... so I named her Nebula instead. And "Orange Momma" became Lady Ellylldan (Elly for short) as she's a flame colored and feisty, so I named her after the 'will o wisp' fairy creatures of Welsh legend.

 

I refuse to name this poor guy Scooter (which he's being called for now, since he more crawls rather than walks), as it seems negative to me... plus, he MIGHT outgrow his deformity. I got Muezza as it's a story of a favorite cat of a prophet and he cut off his sleeve to get up to go pray so he wouldn't wake up the pet who was sleeping on his coat. I thought that was so kind! I would do something like that for my cats!

 

I will keep looking for names, as I'm not really set on one just yet. I thought I would be sure I got the right translation, though, instead of random answers off "Yahoo Answers" site  LOL ;)

Aha, now i can remember this name! Yes, i read about this lovely story on internet. Where have you heard of it Julia? I agree with you that a name exactly affects a person/animal.. Julia is a nice name, do you know it's meaning? My name is Mina, and my parents used to live in Makka/Mina area when they got married, and i am the first child so that they gave me this name for the memories of this holy place :) my other name is Fatimah, and it is our beloved prophet's daughter's name. People call me Mina though.

I was researching names of trickster/mischief gods for the other kitten. Then I got into the Egyptian gods for cats. Then other cat gods, and wound up with the story of Muezza somehow. Like I said, I choose names carefully with lots of extensive research ;)

My full name is Julia Michelle. Julia means “youthfull”. The reason I got Michelle is that when my mom said she didn’t have a name for me yet, the nurse said “She looks like a Michelle to me”. So basically I got named by a stranger and a common tradition of naming after grandparents. Really no thought at all put into it, even though my mother had a good 6 months to do so! Oh well…

 

But Julia does fit me. Tomorrow I’ll be 35 years old, and many people think I’m in my late teens or early 20s! LOL I’m small because of heart problems.
 

And “Scooter” has started lifting himself up and supporting on his back legs! YAY! They still point outward awkwardly, but at least they’re getting stronger and more coordinated. I can’t wait until he’s old enough to take home – about another month or so.

I started reading the Quran (Qu'ran? Koran? Which is right??) while I was taking my weekly bubble bath. :)  I hope I got a good one with translation that's as close as possible without me having to learn Arabic ;) LOL

Soooo... I'm having such a hard time with naming this little guy. Anybody want to help?

He's rather a calm little thing, and only starts to go exploring after his brother and sister have already started to and he decides it might be fun after all! Usually he's content to just sit around and be petted (typical lap cat! LOL)

Mashallah, what a precious little kitten! :) I have no idea what you should name him, but he is oh, so cute! <3 Take good care of him.

It's good to hear you started reading Qur'an (i dont know either how to write properly in English, in Turkish we write as Kuran). I need to tell you something. As muslim women, we read Qur'an with our head, legs, and arms covered. And normally we take ablution (wudu) before touching it. However, since you're not a muslim, maybe you don't have to do all of these. But at least i suggest you to be not "naked" while reading it  :happy:

 

 

For your cute cat, you might name him "sakeen", it means calm in Turkish, and most probably same meaning in Arabic too.

Thank you Muzur, for pointing that out! My bath is about the only time of the week I am alone and can either relax or concentrate on studying what I want without any interruption.  In fact, I haven't really gotten another chance to continue reading since then! :glare:  And I don't know if it makes any difference - it wasn't an actual book, I was reading it from a webpage on my phone...but I guess in these modern times it' still considered "a text" in that way too!

 

I will take excellent care of him! I volunteer at a no-kill cat rescue group, and that's where I got him. I get to visit him and play with him when I go to the shelter to take care of the other 60 cats (with 25 litter boxes to scoop! LOL plus refreshing water bowls, topping off food bowls and cleaning up "accidents" that don't make it into the litter box, takes me about 2 or 3 hours)

I guess I don't have to find a name for him after all. He's walking perfectly normal now, his legs are much stronger and better aligned. So he'll go up for adoption with the rest of his siblings as usual.

 

In some ways I'm a little disappointed, but glad he ended up being healthy and normal after all  :)
